ST. GEORGE, Utah - Even with four players with double-digit kills, the Dixie State women's volleyball team came up on the wrong end of a 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 24-26, 12-25) loss to No. 4 BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday night.
The Red Storm (17-8, 14-3) Â were led by
Edithza Urias (Bakersfield, CA/Golden Valley) and her 17 kills on a .368 hitting percentage. The loss puts Dixie State two games behind the PacWest conference leaders, BYU-Hawaii (18-4, 15-1) with two regular season matches left to go.
Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) logged 12 kills and 11 digs while
Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) added 11 and
Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta) posted 10 kills. Weiland had five block assists and Koehler added four.
Dixie State led by five with a 23-18 lead but the Seasiders rallied late to tie it at 23 with a 5-0 run. The teams went back and forth into extra points and BYU-Hawaii came out on top 27-25 to take the first set.
In set No. 2, DSU led 2-1 and never gave up its lead. The Red Storm led by as many as seven points at 19-12 after kills by Urias and Koehler. Dixie State went on to win 25-20 to even the match.
Set three was another thriller with multiple lead changes. BYU-Hawaii led early but Dixie State battled back to retake the lead at 12-10. The Seasiders stayed in it however, and despite being down 24-21 put together a string of five straight to sneak a 26-24 win in the third set.
The Red Storm struggled in the fourth set when BYU-Hawaii started to get rolling. The Seasiders opened on an 8-1 edge and controlled the whole fourth set, winning 25-12 and handing Dixie State just its third conference loss.
Dixie State will host Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, Senior Day, at 12 p.m. MT in the Student Activities Center.
