Robbins inches closer to record in DSU loss to WOU

Senior posts another double-double, Storm struggle with ball control

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Senior forward Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) notched his 31st career double-double totaling 20 points and 15 rebounds as No. 17 Dixie State lost to Western Oregon, 67-52, in a non-conference game at the Burns Arena.

The Red Storm (1-1) fell behind 13-4 via the sharp outside shooting of the visiting Wolves (3-2). Dixie State would climb back within one point, 23-22, after an 8-0 run sparked by four points from Robbins and two each from Robbie Nielson (Gresham, OR/Barlow) and Anthony Morris (Mesquite, NV/Virgin Valley).

Western Oregon responded with back-to-back triples to extend their lead back out to seven and their sixth 3-pointer of the first half gave the Wolves a 32-24 lead at the break.

Dixie State would get as close as four points early in the second half via a pair of layups from DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) and Zac Hunter (American Fork, UT/American Fork), but a solid WOU defensive effort, including constant ball pressure throughout the court, forced DSU into 20 turnovers for the game. The Wolves converted those giveaways into 21 points.

Robbins paced the club in scoring and rebounding while moving within one point (1,051) of the Dixie State all-time Division II career scoring record, currently held by assistant coach Ryan Sanchez (1,052). Thompson followed with 11 points. Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, CA/Steele Canyon) fell one point shy of a double-double, posting nine points and 11 rebounds.

DSU scored a season-low 52 points on 33.3 percent (18-54) shooting from the field. The Storm failed to hit a 3-point bucket (0-8) in a game for the first time since Jan. 16, 2010, on the road against Academy of Art.

Dixie State will return to action beginning Friday at the California Baptist Ayres Thanksgiving Classic in Riverside. In the first of two post-Turkey Day games, DSU faces last year's West Region runner-up, the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus. Tip from Van Dyne Gym is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Pacific, 5:30 p.m. Mountain.
