Storm bit by Sharks, 4-3

DSU posts best scoring output of the year

KANEOHE, Hawaii – Dixie State posted its highest goal total of the season, but a pair of Jackson Groves goals pushed host Hawaii Pacific to a 4-3 win in Pacific West Conference play at Atherton Field.

Dixie State (1-6-1, 1-3 PacWest) spotted the Sharks a two-goal lead 28 minutes in to the match despite having good looks at the frame. Sophomore forward Michael Ropelato (Roy, UT/Roy) put the Storm on the board in the 29th minute cashing in a rebound off the HPU goalkeeper.

With a breakeven shot total of 7-7 over the opening 45 minutes, HPU (6-4-1, 4-1) held its 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

Sean Jenne (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) tied the match early in the second half with a short-range blast off an Alex Galvan (San Antonio, TX/Reagan) assist. Eight minutes later, Bryan Baugh (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) lobbed a throw-in toward the net. Freshman forward Frank Mallek (Yuma, AZ/Kofa) chipped in a shot over the pursuing goalie to give Dixie State a 3-2 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Sharks found its equalizer sparked by a free kick and header by Groves. Later, Groves lined a low shot from a corner kick under DSU goalie Hayden Matthews (St. George, UT/Dixie) for the game winner.

HPU outshot Dixie State 16-14 for the match. Five Storm players recorded two shots including Michael Gray (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman) and Jara Eshete (Stansbury, UT/Stansbury).

Matthews notched four saves in goal.

Dixie State concludes its trip to the islands with a match against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 11.
