HILO, Hawaii – Closing out a trip to the islands, Dixie State men's soccer played its fourth match in the last eight days. After a scoreless first half, Hawaii Hilo broke through with a goal in the 76
th minute to defeat the Red Storm 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
"This is a tough loss," Dixie State head coach
Danny Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron) said. "We dominated the first half, but just could not find the net."
DSU controlled the pace of play while both teams were able to fire just one shot on frames in the opening 45 minutes.
Michael Gray (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman) had the Storm effort in the 13
th minute.
Alex Galvan (San Antonio, TX/Reagan) took the other Dixie State (1-7-1, 1-4 PacWest) shot in the match, a blocked shot early in the second period.
"The second half was even, but another error on our part cost us in the end," Ortiz added.
The error freed Rhyen Eugenio for a header that slid past
Hayden Matthews (St. George, UT/Dixie). Dixie State was unable to take a shot over the final 15 minutes.
UH Hilo (5-6-1, 3-4 PacWest) outshot the Storm 7-2 while both clubs had three corner kicks.
Dixie State returns home beginning Thursday, Oct. 16 for a pair of league matches beginning with Notre Dame de Namur.
"It will be great to finally play at home," Ortiz said.
Kickoff from Hansen Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
