HONOLULU – From the opening whistle to the final buzzer, Dixie State women's soccer dictated nearly ever facet of Monday's Pacific West Conference matchup on the road against Chaminade.
Â
With a large shot discrepancy titled toward the Red Storm and the first collegiate hat trick in the career of senior
Jennifer Mason (Springville, UT/Springville), Dixie State sailed to a 4-0 win over the Silverswords at Saint Louis Field.
Â
"We played pretty soccer today" Dixie State head coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We talked about having more intensity in the final third."
Â
That intensity led to a 28-5 shot differential for the Red Storm, including an 11-0 advantage in shots toward the goal.
Â
Erica Gonzalez (Avondale, AZ/Westview) scored the final goal for Dixie State (4-4-1, 2-1 PacWest), winners of the first two matches in its weeklong trip in Hawaii. Chaminade dropped to 2-6 on the season, 2-3 in league play.
Â
The day ultimately belonged to Mason. She began her scoring barrage in the 23
rd minute, earning a break away off a crisp Gonzalez pass. Mason chipped a shot over the Chaminade goalie for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime.
Â
Goal number two came just shy of the 51
st minute mark when Mason took a
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, AZ/Apollo) throw in and placed the ball into the net. She completed the hat trick in the 61
st minute scoring off a
Mindi Beckstrom (Nibley, UT/Mountain Crest) corner kick.
Â
In the match, Mason doubled her goal total from three to six on the season. The output ties Mason for the PacWest lead in goals with Massiel Castellanos of NDNU and puts her in the outright lead in points with 15.
Â
"Jen did what she does best, which is score goals," Bingham added. "She's so dangerous in front of the goal."
Â
Gonzalez added the Storm's fourth tally in the 63
rd minute with a long 25 yards shot off the break with Arollo.
Â
Defensively, Dixie State kept the Silverswords from threatening the goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Danica Nusink (Springville, UT/Springville) and redshirt freshman
Angie Ciucci (Stockholm, Sweden/Thorildsplans Gymnasium) combined for the shutout.
Â
Match number three of the Storm's current road trip is Thursday against Hawaii Pacific. The Storm and the Sharks tangle at 3 p.m. Hawaiian (7 p.m. Mountain) time.
