Dixie State wins soggy match, 2-1

Storm battle wet weather to earn PacWest win at BYU-Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii – Dixie State forward Aubri Detmer (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) and midfielder Kaisa Rogers (Springville, UT/Springville) each scored their first goals of the season, helping the Red Storm to a 2-1 win over BYU-Hawaii on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play.

"This was a great win for our team," Dixie State head coach Kacey Bingham said. "Aubri and Kaisa scored great goals for us.

Detmer made the most of her first start of the year in the Red Storm's (3-4-1, 1-1) second league match. In the seventh minute, after a Emily Fox (Lehi, UT/Lehi) free kick and passing shot from Rogers, Detmer found the net beating the Seasider goalkeeper to the far post.

BYU-Hawaii (3-5, 2-1) tied the match at 1-1 with five minutes left in the opening half. The Seasiders had a 6-4 shot advantage and scored after a DSU defender was stripped of the ball.

The Seasider attack would continue early in the second half, but Dixie State freshman Danica Nusink (Springville, UT/Springville) was up to the challenge. She made two crucial saves over the final 45 minutes, allowing DSU to continue its drive for the go-ahead goal.

That would come in the 79th minute courtesy of a great pass, a falling defender and a nice shot. Erica Gonzalez (Avondale, AZ/Westview) placed a pass to Rogers, who shook off her defender and beat the BYUH goalkeeper to the top-left corner. The goal was the first game-wineer for Rogers this season.

"It's always competitive playing BYUH," Bingham added. "We had several adversities thrown our way today, but we handled them well."

Nusink earns her second win of the year for Dixie State.

The Storm has one, short day off on Oahu and will look to continue on the winning way when they play Chaminade on Monday, Oct. 6 at 12:30 Hawaiian time (4:30 p.m. Mountain).
