ST. GEORGE, Utah - In a battle of undefeated teams in league play, the Dixie State women's volleyball team answered the call and took down Point Loma 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon.
Edithza Urias (Bakersfield, CA/Golden Valley) led with 14 kills,
Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) had 13,
Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta) posted 11 and Makenzie Bird added 10 to lead the charge for the Red Storm (10-5, 7-0). DSU hit .215 for the match while Point Loma (9-5, 6-1) was right there at .203. Urias added four service aces and a solo block while Rex had 12 digs.Â
Each set was contested and stayed close. In set one, neither team led by more than three until a strong finish from Dixie State. Ahead 21-19, another kill from Rex gave the Red Storm some cushion sparking a 4-1 run to finish the set with a 25-20 victory.
Point Loma came back battling in the second set. Despite the Red Storm leading 19-13 looking to take a two-set lead, the Sea Lions scored four straight to get back in it and force Dixie State into a timeout.
The Sea Lions kept going and tied the set at 22-22, and was able to steal set two to even the match.
DSU came back strong in set three, going down early but staying focused to retake the lead at 8-5. DSU remained in control for most of the third, trading scores back and forth and prevailed 25-21 to go up 2-1.
After scoring the first point, Dixie State fell behind until finally retaking the lead at the 19-18 mark. The Red Storm stayed in front and pushed the lead to 24-20 and match point. The Sea Lions made it interesting with three consecutive points but came up just short after
Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) put down the final kill to win it 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Dixie State now prepared for a difficult Hawaii road trip to face some of the top competition in the PacWest. DSU starts the trip with Chaminade on Monday at 11 p.m. MT/7p.m. HT.
