ST. GEORGE, Utah – Sophomore forward
Alissa Moffat (Provo, UT/Timpview) scored in the 30
th minute to lead Dixie State to a 1-0 win over Dominican on Thursday night at Hansen Stadium.
"We are dealing with a lot of injuries with our starters, so it's huge when a player like Alissa can step in and score a goal," DSU head coach
Kacey Bingham said.
The Red Storm (8-7-1, 6-4) posted its sixth shutout of the season behind stellar defense and timely goalkeeping from freshman
Danica Nusink (Springville, UT/Springville). Dominican had multiple chances in the second half, but fell to 3-12-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the PacWest.
Nusink made five saves and posted her second solo shutout of the season.
"Danica did an amazing job in the goal," Bingham said.
Off a center cross from Jasmine Arrolo, Moffat weaved through the Penguin defense and beat goalkeeper Ashley Lentz just below the crossbar in the center area of the goal. The goal was the first of Moffat's collegiate career.
Dixie State had a 19-12 shot edge and eight corner kicks to Dominican's four.
Dominican had three great chances in the second half that just missed the mark. Nusink, including a diving stop in the 76th minute, saved two header shots by Kendra Corsberg. A final attempt from Corsberg was tracking towards the far post, but
Kaisa Rogers (Springville, UT/Springville) was perfectly placed against the support for the save.
"Our number one focus this game was getting a shutout," Bingham added. "We worked hard to make that happen." Darian McCloy (Herriman, UT/Herriman) had five shots and two on goal for Dixie State.
Jennifer Mason (Springville, UT/Springville) added three shots on the night.
Dixie State returns to action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Academy of Art.
