Storm drops series, swept Saturday by Sunbirds

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FRESNO, Calif. – Dixie State pitchers allowed 29 hits Saturday in dropping a pair of Pacific West Conference games to host Fresno Pacific 3-1 and 12-2.

Suffering their first league series loss since a trip to the Hawaiian Islands, the Red Storm dropped to 27-13 on the year and 19-11 in the PacWest.

Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) allowed three runs, two earned, over six innings in taking the loss. Kort Christofferson tossed two scoreless innings in his first appearance since March 22.

Trailing 3-0, Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) lined an RBI single in the eighth inning to pull Dixie State within two runs. The Storm put two runners aboard with a walk to Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) and a single by Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza). With the tying run at first, Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) lined out sharply to second base, doubling off Hanley at first to end the rally and the game.

In game two, DSU took a 2-1 lead in the third thanks to a Sunbird miscue. Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) scored from third on a failed pick off attempt and Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) scored on a Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) single. The Red Storm were held to two hits by James Lagorio and Kellen Hackett.

FPU tied it up in the bottom half of the frame and open up a big lead with a pair of five-run frames in the fourth and fifth. The Sunbirds knocked around a quartet of Storm pitchers for 21 hits in the series finale.

Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) fell to 1-5 on the year scattering seven runs on 12 hits in 3.1 innings.

Dixie State opens up its final homestand of the year on Thursday against PacWest leaders, California Baptist. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is set for 7 p.m.
