Lopes win wild series finale

Box Score

SAINT GEORGE, Utah – Saturday's series finale pitting Dixie State and No. 10 Grand Canyon saw a combined 21 runs, 24 hits and 19 walks in a madcap 11-10 win for the Lopes to salvage one game of the weekend set.

Dixie State saw a four-game win streak snapped to fall to 26-10. The Storm pitching staff, at times, struggled against the GCU (30-9) by allowing 12 walks and 13 hits.

Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) took his first loss of the year surrendering the game-winning run to GCU in the ninth inning. He allowed two runs on four hits and walked four. Chris Lindmark swatted a base hit through the right side pushing the Lopes ahead for the final time.

Offensively, Dixie State took an early lead on an RBI fielder's choice from Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) in the opening inning. Grand Canyon scored five times in the second and once more in the fourth to lead 6-1.

The Storm countered with six tallies in fourth while regaining the lead. Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) brought home C. Johnson from first with a double. A sacrifice bunt and a walk put runners at the corner for Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza). The outfielder singled to center scoring Kaplan. Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) them singled to left scoring two and advanced to second on an errant throw home. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) reached on a hit by pitch and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) walked to load the bags. Johnson lined a single to center scoring the tying an go-ahead tallies before Manning was retired heading to third.

GCU retook the lead with three runs in their half of the sixth. The Red Storm responded with consecutive home runs from Manning – a two-run shot to right field – and C. Johnson's solo shot in the same direction.

With the game tied in the eighth, Yack singled on a bunt and advanced to second on a wild throw. Kline lined a deep shot to center field that was caught by Kyle Raidy while crashing into the wall. Yack appeared to have scored the go-ahead run by tagging up two bases, but was called out upon appeal for leaving second base early.

Dixie State had another chance in the same frame. Manning, C. Johnson and Kaplan were all hit by pitches to fill up the bases. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) struck out against Mark Jarrett to end the threat.

Jarrett closed out the win in relief inducing a double play form Yack in the ninth.

Hanley closed out a solid series going 3 for 6 while Yack, C. Johnson and Kaplan each added two hits.

Dixie State heads to the central valley of California for a weekend series at Fresno Pacific beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
