AZUSA, Calif. – Junior starter Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber) pitched six strong innings for Dixie State to earn a split of Saturday's doubleheader and a victory in the weekend road series at Azusa Pacific.

The Red Storm fell behind early and staged a big comeback before falling 9-8 in the first game. DSU banged out 10 hits to take the afternoon game, 4-1.

After winning three of four games in the series, the Red Storm hold on to third place in the Pacific West Conference with a 13-7 league record and 20-8 mark overall.

Christoffersen surrendered a first inning solo home run, but bounced back to strike out two en route to his third victory of the year. Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) retired the side in order for the save (4).

Two runs in the third inning gave DSU the lead. Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) doubled to lead off and Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) followed with a bunt single. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) brought in Johnson with a groundout to shortstop. Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) singled through the left side for a 2-1 lead.

Ryan Westcott doubled in the fourth and scored on Johnson double play ball. With two down, Nash doubled down the left field line to plate Kata.

Nate Namanny took the loss for the Cougars (9-21, 7-13 PWC).

Game one saw Dixie State take an early lead with a Hanley RBI double in the first. Azusa Pacific scored the next nine runs unanswered to lead 9-1 heading to the eighth.

Nash walked, Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) singled to left and Hanley brought in Nash with a double against APU starter Zach Hedges, who pitched masterfully up to that point with 11 strikeouts. The Cougars made a pitching change to Hunter Brown. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) launched his first pitch in relief to left field for a three-run homer. The bases loaded after a pitch hit Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) and both Matt Medina (Tooele, UT/Tooele) and Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) singled. Kata came through with a two-run single. Nash reached on a fielding error to reload the bases. Yack singled to deep right scoring one, but Nash was caught around second and tagged for the second out. With the tying run at third, Hanley flew out to center field.

Dixie scored seven runs on seven hits in the frame, but went down in order in the ninth to fall a run short.

Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) scattered six runs on 11 hits over five innings. The loss was his first of the year and in his Dixie State career.

Dixie State was out-hit 15 to 10 in Saturday's opener.
