Dixie State wins resumed game, drops chance to sweep Hilo

DSU and Hilo split in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It's not very often it takes 26 days to finish a baseball game.

But thanks to rain and unplayable conditions at Wong Stadium on March 11, the final two games of a four-game Pacific West Conference series between Dixie State and Hawai'i Hilo could not be completed until Wednesday at a neutral field – Totman Stadium on the campus of California Baptist.

Dixie State added a pair of runs over the final two frames to win the originally postponed game, 5-1. UH Hilo avoided the series sweep behind a solid outing from Seamus Yoneshige with a 7-4 win.

The Red Storm (17-7, 10-6 PWC) handed the ball to Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) for the final three innings to preserve a one-run outing from Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) on the Big Island. On his first pitch, Mooney induced a groundball double play to eliminate a base runner. The reliever would allow only one hit in the Vulcan ninth to earn his third save of the year.

Christiansen had to wait, but earned his fourth year of the season without a loss.

Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) in the eighth and Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) added an RBI sacrifice fly in the ninth.

In the seven-inning concluder, Yoneshige struck out seven and got 14 hits in support for Hilo (7-25, 7-19 PWC).

Dixie State took an early lead on an RBI single by Kaplan, but couldn't capitalize further with the bases loaded.

UHH cashed in seven runs on seven hits over the third and fourth innings. The Red Storm committed three errors over the span to continue the scoring. Samuel Kim went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Vulcans.

Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) surrendered seven runs, two earned thanks to the miscues, on 11 hits over four innings in the loss. Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) had three of the nine DSU hits.

Dixie State stays in Southern California for a weekend series with Azusa Pacific. First pitch is Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific (4 p.m. Mountain).
