SAINT GEORGE – Senior pitchers Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) and Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) provided quality starts while the 14th-ranked Dixie State University baseball team swatted around 19 hits to sweep the opening two games of a Pacific West Conference series with Point Loma, 4-1 and 8-3 (7), on Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field.

Dixie State, ranked by every major Division II baseball poll, has won eight straight games including Saturday's opening duo in PacWest play, to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Dedrick got the ball for DSU in game one. He battled through a major scare in the PLNU (5-8, 3-3 PWC) third inning inducing a line out to center with the bases loaded. He tossed 7.2 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out seven.

DSU notched two runs in the third on RBI singles from Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza).

Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) singled home Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) in the fourth inning and Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) pushed across Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.

Dedrick departed after a pair of walks in the PLNU eighth. Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber) struck out two in closing out his first season save.

Every man in the lineup had at least one hit – Hanley led DSU with two hits in the opener.

Friend was solid in the nightcap inducing 12 groundball outs over 5.2 innings. The southpaw moved to 3-0 on the year scattering three runs on six hits.

Kline had three of his four game RBIs in his first two plate appearances. His first inning two-run single plated Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) and Hanley. Two innings later, Kline began a four-run DSU frame with a single to score
Nash after a leadoff triple. Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) added a two-run single scoring Kaplan and Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium).

Kline and Kaplan combined for the final two tallies in the DSU fourth inning. Kline's fourth RBI came on a sac fly plating Nash. Kaplan doubled to the gap in left center to close the frame.

Cody White (Lacey, WA/Timberline) retired four of five batters he saw in closing relief. Kline, Kaplan and Slesk combined for six of the nine Storm hits in the nightcap.

The series take a Sunday sabbatical before closing out Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
