Christiansen holds HPU at bay as Storm avoid sweep

5-2 win evens league record for DSU

Box Score

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – What one senior started, another finished.

Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) threw four strong innings before falling into some trouble in the fifth. Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) thwarted the threat and allowed just one hit the rest of the way leading Dixie State to a 5-2 win Friday over Hawai'i Pacific at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Red Storm avoided the sweep to improve to 12-6-1 on the season and 5-5-1 in Pacific West Conference play.

Christiansen entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the HPU fifth after Dedrick surrendered a pair of runs. The reliever forced a foul out to the third base side leaving the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. He allowed just one hit, a leadoff single in the eighth and retired the side in order for the win in relief (2-0).

DSU led off the fourth with a pair of extra base hits – a double from Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) and an RBI triple to right center from Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis). Ryan Wescott (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) followed with a grounder to score Manning for a 2-0 lead.

Manning delivered again during a two-out rally in the fifth. Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) was the catalyst with a double. After a walk, Manning pulled a ball through the right side for a 3-0 lead.

HPU scored their two runs off Dedrick in the fifth after loading the bases via walks and getting a two-run single.

The score remained 3-2 in favor of Dixie State until the ninth. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) tripled in to the gap with one out and scored on the next play, an RBI single from Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham). Hanley added a single and advanced on an error. HPU brought in a new pitcher and Kaplan doubled to left field for the second insurance run.

Dixie State had eight hits thanks in part to two hits each from the 3-4-5 hitters – Hanley, Kaplan and Manning.

The Red Storm returns home for a PacWest series with Academy of Art beginning Friday with a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
