Storm sweep Sunday DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HILO, Hawaii – Dixie State opened its eight-game road trip to the Hawaiian Islands with a pair of victories Sunday over UH Hilo. Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) provided the big offense with 5 RBIs including a grand slam in a 15-0 game one victory. Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) and Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber) combined to allow five hits while Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) swatted the game-winner in a 2-1 nightcap win in extra innings.

The Red Storm snapped a two-game skid to improve to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference.

Offense was not an issue in Sunday's opener. DSU banged out 18 hits in support of senior starter Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View). A six-run fourth inning provided enough cushion for Dedrick. He tossed six shutout innings allowing only five Hilo hits for his third consecutive win.

Manning had an eighth inning RBI double before putting the game out of reach with a grand slam in the ninth. Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) and Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) each had three hits while Hawaiian native #D.J. Andrade# plated a pair of runs.

Three relievers combined to close out the final three inning scattering three hits – Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) and the debuting Mick Jarvis (Duluth, GA/Desert Hills) and Matt Hill (Cypress, CA/Pacifica).

Jordan Kurokawa did not allow an earned run, but was tagged with the game one loss for the Vulcans.

In game two, the duo of Friend and Christoffersen struck out seven and held off late Vulcan rallies. Friend allowed one run on a pair of hits in the starting role. Kody Christofferson filled the final four frames. He struck out four while giving up three hits for his first win in relief.

Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) brought home the game winner in the first extra frame with a two-out single scoring pinch runner Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan).

Ryan Wescott (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) doubled home Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) in the third inning for an early lead. Wescott and Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) combined for four of the Red Storm five hits.

DSU closes out the series with a double header Monday beginning at 8 p.m. Mountain.
