Late rally secures opener; DSC shutout in nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LOS ANGELES – The dramatics of Opening Day had to wait a day due to inclement weather Friday in the Los Angeles area. Thanks to a ninth-inning rally in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Dixie State College split a doubleheader with CSULA – winning the opener 14-10 before dropping the second game, 4-0.

Sophomore Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) cashed in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and the Red Storm (1-1) down a run. With two retired and a full count, Kata doubled to right center plating Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham), Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) and #D.J. Andrade# for a 12-10 lead. Kata would score insurance thanks to a Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) RBI single. In total, DSC plated five runs in the ninth.

Kort Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber) retired the side in order to preserve the win in relief for Cody White (Lacey, WA/Timberline). Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) scattered six earned runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings during his first start.

Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) and Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) each hit home runs for Dixie State. Each team had 13 hits, but the Golden Eagles succumbed to five errors.

In game two, Jordan Sechler tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout while striking out five for CSULA.

Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) allowed single runs in the first and fourth innings respectively to take the loss. He allowed five hits, struck out four and walked four.

Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) and Andrade each had two hits in the second game. Dixie State outhit CSULA seven to six, but failed to push a run across.

The series concludes Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Mountain).
