Nash homers leading DSC to win over China

Senior has two hits in Dixie State's fourth win of the year

PEORIA, Ariz. – Senior outfielder Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning leading Dixie State College to a 6-4 victory over the Chinese National Team on Diamond No. 2 at the Seattle Mariners Spring Training Complex.

Nash, the current DSC Male Athlete of the Week, went 2-for-3 including a bunt single in the third inning.

Dixie State improves to 4-1 on the season with the win against the squad that will represent the People's Republic of China in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, March 2-6.

Nash took a 1-0 pitch from Chinese reliever Liu Yu deep over the fence in left field with Ryan Westcott and Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) on to break a 1-1 game into a decent lead.

Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) allowed a pair of runs in the subsequent half inning, but earned the win (1-0) by striking out three over three innings of relief for starter Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)).

“We played hard and the pitchers did a solid job of giving us 1-2 innings at a time,” head coach Chris Pfatenhauer said.

The quartet of Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber), Rustin Sveum (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain), Cody White (Lacey, WA/Timberline) and Kort Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber) combined to scatter one run on two hits over the final four innings to preserve the win.

Pfatenhauer added, “Late in the game, we cashed in a couple of big insurance runs that were huge.”

#D.J. Andrade scored in the seventh thanks to one of three Chinese errors on a ground ball by Nash. Kata played small ball in the ninth to bring home pinch runner (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain)Matt Medina# on a squeeze bunt for a 6-4 lead.

Ko. Christoffersen fanned two over the final 1.1 innings to earn his second save of the year.

Dixie State and the Chinese National Team each had eight hits a piece. Nash, Andrade and Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) each had two hits.

The final game of the two-game set is Friday at 10 a.m. from the Mariners complex. Expected to start on the hill for the Storm is Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View).
