Utah Tech belted out a season-high 19 hits, including an NCAA-era school record tying three triples, as the Trailblazers completed their road WAC sweep of in-state rival Utah Valley on the strength of a 13-10 victory on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
Â
Thanks to the weekend sweep, Utah Tech (26-14/5-1 WAC) moved into first place in the WAC standings and extended its current win streak to four-straight games.Â
Â
The Trailblazers got off to a great start, scoring runs in each of their first four offensive frames en route to an 11-3 fourth inning lead.
Â
With the game tied at 1-1 after one inning complete, Utah Tech loaded the bases ahead of Blazer lead-off hitter
Kyle McDaniel, who laced a one-out, opposite-field single to chase home two of those base runners to break the stalemate.
Â
Hudson Manwaring followed with an RBI-single of his own, while McDaniel wound up scoring on a two-out
Miller Durham base knock that staked the Trailblazers to a 5-1 advantage.
Â
UVU (15-24/1-5 WAC) managed to get two of those runs back in the home second, only to see the Utah Tech counter with two runs in the third and four more in the fourth to open up an eight-run cushion.
Â
Andrew Pyle collected the first of his two RBI on a ground out in third, while
Petey Soto Jr. chased home
Finnegan Stewart six pitches later.
Â
Then in the fourth with one run already in and one out the stanza, Stewart tripled home two more runs, and later scored on Soto Jr.'s second RBI-single in as many innings.
Â
The Wolverines methodically chipped away at the deficit with a pair of runs in the fourth, another in the fifth, and three more in the seventh to pull within two at 11-9.
Â
Meanwhile UVU beleaguered pitching staff limited Utah Tech to only three hits and four total base runners over that stretch.
Â
However that all changed in the eighth when after a
Mays Madsen lead-off single, Stewart legged out his second triple of the game to up the Blazer advantage to 12-9.
Â
Pyle then followed that with a triple of his own four pitches later to stretch that lead to 13-9.Â
Â
Senior reliever
Brock Roundy, who came on with two outs in the seventh inning, stayed on to work a scoreless eighth, while sophomore hurler
Talan Kelly held the Wolverines to one run in the ninth to help complete the Old Hammer Rivalry sweep.
Â
Stewart became just the second Trailblazer in the program's NCAA era to record two triples in one game, and he was the first to do it during the Blazers' brief time as a Division I program.
Â
Former Utah Tech outfielder Garrett Nash was the first to turn the trick, doing so in home win over Hawai'i Pacific (3/26/12) during the 2012 season.
Â
In addition, Utah Tech's three triples on Sunday tied a team record that was first set during the 2015 season in a home victory vs. Academy of Art (3/27/15).Â
Â
Stewart also wound up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as he went 4-for-4 with three RBI and a career-high four runs scored.
Â
Durham continued to stay hot as he went 4-for-6 at the plate to go with his RBI and run scored. For Durham it was his sixth straight multi-hit game, while he went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) in the three-game series overall with three doubles and four RBI.
Â
Madsen finished with three hits along with three runs scored, while Manwaring,
Ryan Kroepel and Soto Jr. each collected two hits apiece. Soto Jr. also managed to extend his career long hit streak to 13-straight games, and his on-base streak to a career high 33-straight games.Â
Â
Utah Tech will conclude its four-game Utah County road trip on Monday night at BYU. First pitch at Miller Park in Provo is set for 5:05 p.m. (MT).
