LAST TIME OUT: The question arose after Dixie State's tough home win on Thursday against Grand Canyon – would there be a let down on the road at Azusa Pacific? From the seven-minute mark of the first half on, the answer was an emphatic no.

McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) (Payson, UT/Payson) led all DSC scorers with 16 points and Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland) thrilled a partisan crowd from his hometown with two monster alley-oop dunks leading Dixie State to a convincing 85-57 win over the host Cougars in Pacific West Conference play.

A fourth consecutive victory boosted Dixie State to 11-4 on the year and 6-1 in the PacWest.

Curtis Papenfuss (Happy Valley, OR/Clackamas) (Happy Valley, OR/Clackamas) hit four shots including a pair of 3-pointers for 10 of the points off the bench.

Robbins added to the second half highlights throwing down two alley-oop dishes from Massey and DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy).

The lead hit 30 points at one point, allowing head coach Jon Judkins the luxury to empty his bench. Robbie Nielson (Gresham, OR/Barlow) (Gresham, OR/Barlow) took advantage with five points in the final minutes in his first game back from injuring his hand.

JUDKINS ON CBU: A very good team, as we saw the first time we played them. We have to have the same intensity. They have played really well since, trying new lineups. We have to defend and rebound again.

DEFENSE KEY TO WIN OVER CBU (LAST MEETING, 2013): Dixie State College successfully mixed up its defensive looks and crashed the glass holding California Baptist to 28-percent shooting in the second half en route to a convincing Pacific West Conference road victory, 69-57, at Van Dyne Gym.

Junior forward Dalton Groskreutz (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) led five Red Storm (9-4, 4-1 PWC) players in double figures with 17 points. Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland), playing a short distance from his hometown of Upland, posted his fourth double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Adding to the solid team performance was a stellar effort from junior point guard Kimball Payne (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak) (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak). Evading pressure from the Lancers (7-4, 1-2 PWC) all night, the on-court general dished out six assists and notched 10 points.

“Our team wanted it tonight,” head coach Jon Judkins said. “This was the best team performance of the year.”

Bench play proved critical against CBU. De'Quan Thompson scored in double figures for the third straight game with 11 points, including two 3-pointers without a miss. In 28 minutes, senior forward Derek Owen (St George, UT/Dixie) (St George, UT/Dixie) notched 10 points and pulled down seven boards.

The lead fluctuated eight times over the opening 20 minutes. CBU led by as many as five points behind 15 first-half points from junior guard Kevin Wong.

Momentum turned quickly with a 5-0 second half run by the Storm. Groskreutz hit a contested 3-pointer and Robbins added a jumper in the paint. CBU took possession later after a charge and sank two fouls shots to close within four at 49-45. Dixie State responded with a critical 6-0 run on consecutive lay-ups from Owen, Groskreutz and Massey. A subsequent 7-0 run highlighted by a Groskreutz three pushed the lead to 15.

Wong only scored two points in the second half, but led the Lancers with 17 points.

NIGHT OWLS HIT THE CENTURY MARK: Dixie State College basketball won its 100th night game (5pm start or later) in the Jon Judkins era on Thursday. The Storm are 100-57 after the sun set and sport a good 17-6 record in games strated before 5 p.m.
