ST. GEORGE – Days removed from a home upset of eighth-ranked Cal State Los Angeles, the Dixie State College men's soccer team fell short of sweeping both games of the 2012 DSC Soccer Kickoff Classic. Colorado Mesa scored in the 17th minute and held off the Red Storm 1-0 on Monday.
Dixie State fell to 1-1-0 on the young season, while Colorado Mesa improved to 1-0-1.
Mario Escobar scored the lone goal after a DSC header toward goalkeeper Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) recoiled off his hands into open space. Escobar deposited the ball into the left side of the net.
Each team took eight shots overall, yet Dixie State had the advantage on-goal six shots to three. DSC stepped up its production in the second half with six shots.
Francisco Garay (American Fork, UT/American Fork) and Michael Ropelato (Roy, UT/Roy) each had two shots for the Red Storm. Walters made two saves in net.
Dixie State begins a six-match road swing with two matches in the state of Washington next week. The opening match is Friday, Sept. 7, at No. 11 Seattle Pacific. Kick off from Seattle is set for 8 p.m. Mountain. A live stat link is available through DixieAtheltics.com.
