MSOC: Red Storm drop Bay Area showdown to NDNU, 2-1

DSC match skid hits four

Box Score

BELMONT, Calif. – A quiet and docile first half turned highly offensive in the second half during the opening match of a Bay Area trip for the Dixie State College men's soccer team. Michael Ropelato (Roy, UT/Roy) scored in the 54th minute, but a pair of Argonaut goals from Jonathan Gonzales lifted the home team to a 2-1 victory in Pacific West Conference play.

“It was our best offensive match of the year,” DSC head coach Danny Ortiz said. “We may have had more shots today than all season combined.”

Dixie State (1-4-0, 0-1 PWC) out shot the Argo in the second half 11 to 10, and had 13 shots overall.

“It was a very good game with a lot of back and forth action,” Ortiz said.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Storm got on the scoreboard first. Off a Seph Azevedo (Meridian, ID/Mountain View) long pass over the NDNU defenders, Ropelato beat Jay Tauruoka for a 1-0 lead.

“Our offense looked better with the return of Jordan Roylance (Smithfield, UT/Sky View),” Ortiz said. “It changed the game to have him return with the great play of David Potocki (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Ridge) in the back.”

Roylance led all Dixie State players with four shots.

NDNU found its equalizer in the 73rd minute and the game-winning header from Gonzalez in the 84th minute.

Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) made three saves in the net for DSC.

Dixie State continues Pac West play on Monday at Dominican. The match with the Penguins is set for 2:30 p.m. Pacific (3:30 p.m. Mountain time).
