BASE: Zitting plates go-ahead run in Dixie State split in Hilo

HILO, Hawaii – Dixie State College senior shortstop Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) sliced a base hit to right field in the top half of the ninth inning to give the Red Storm a 4-3 win over Hawaii Hilo in game two of a doubleheader Monday.

The extra-inning triumph came after a 5-1 loss in the series opener at Wong Stadium.

Dixie State, with a third straight doubleheader split on its current Hawaiian road trip, moves to 24-12 on the year and 20-10 in the Pacific West Conference. UH Hilo moved its mark to 11-31, 8-25 PWC.

Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) went the distance for Dixie State in the game one loss – allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. It was his second complete game of his career and came nearly a year to the date of the last CG, also against the Vulcans in Hilo on April 13, 2011.

Offensively, DSC knocked nine hits off UHH starter Bryan Raines, but only tallied one run on the scoreboard – a seventh-inning RBI single from Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ). The Storm knocked four hits in the frame.

Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) had two hits each for DSC.

The nightcap saw the Vulcans nab an early run in the first. Dixie State countered in the third, capitalizing on a dropped ball in the outfield. Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) hit a sac fly to center plating Zitting to tie the game at 1-1.

In the fourth, Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) and Zitting pulled off a double steal of home and second base for the lead. Hanley added an RBI double later in the frame to give the Red Storm a two-run cushion.

Hilo would close the gap with a pair if runs in the home half of the fourth for a 3-3 tie that lasted until the ninth.

DSC played fundamental baseball to cash in the go-ahead run. Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) led off the frame with a pinch-hit single and advanced to second on a Darrington sac bunt. Zitting came through on a full count with a single to right field, plating Boyer.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) faced a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the ninth before inducing a fly out to earn the victory. Zapata tossed three innings of one-hit baseball to improve to 2-0.

Dixie State closes out its trip to Hawaii with two more games against Hilo beginning at 5 p.m. Mountain.
