Red Storm leaves Hawaii 4-4 after Tuesday DH split

HILO, Hawaii – One word accurately describes the Dixie State College baseball trip to Hawaii: split. The Red Storm split a Friday doubleheader with the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans – dropping the opener 6-3 before salvaging the finale 4-2 in seven innings.

Going 4-4 over eight games on the islands, Dixie State will return to the mainland with a 25-13 overall record and a 21-11 mark in Pacific West Conference play.

Dixie State got three tallies in the third inning of the nightcap. Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) knocked home Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) with a ground out and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) scored from third on a wild pitch. Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) added an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Nate Littlewood (Saint George, UT/Pine View) walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning for an insurance run.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) relieved DSC starter Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning. He induced a ground ball to end that threat and stranded the tying Vulcan runner at second in the final frame to pick up his second win in relief.

Dixie State was held to just four hits in the win.

In the early game, UH Hilo capitalized on their opportunities while the Red Storm stranded 13 base runners. Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) also tallied three hits and scored a run.

Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) scattered four runs on seven hits in six innings.

Dixie State returns home beginning Friday for a Pacific West Conference matchup with the league-leading Lancers of California Baptist. First pitch of a doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, April 20, from Bruce Hurst Field.
