BASE: Friend shines, Littlewood homers twice in DH split

ST. GEORGE – Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) tossed six scoreless innings in the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader leading Dixie State College to a 5-0 win. Montana State Billings took the opener 7-6 after a six-run frame included a grand slam.
 
Dixie State College took three of four games in the series to improve to 11-5 on the year. The Yellowjackets sit at 3-5 after the set.
 
Friend (3-0) allowed singles in the first and sixth inning while striking out six. Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) walked the first two batters he faced before striking out the next three to close out the game.
 
DSC struck early against MSUB starter Brian Hutchings. Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) tripled home Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan), Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) followed with an RBI double and Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) added an RBI single.
 
Andrade, who went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, brought Johnson home a second time in the third inning with an infield single to shortstop.
 
Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) had a solo homer, his third of the year, in the fifth.
 
In the day's first game, MSUB scored six times in the fifth frame and held off a late DSC charge for a 7-6 win. Trevor Wilson had the highlight swing with a grand slam to left center field capping the six-run spurt.
 
Littlewood brought the Storm within a run three innings later with a three-run blast to left field. Nash was the only other Storm player with multiple hits and RBI in game one (two and two).
 
Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) took the loss – surrendering five runs on six hits over 4.2 innings despite striking out five.
 
Dixie State returns to action at Bruce Hurst Field on Tuesday, March 13 in a non-conference doubleheader against Colorado Mesa University. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
