Red Storm sweep past Knights to earn series win

Aggressive offense returns in 8-1, 18-4 wins

ST. GEORGE – The 1959 song by Dinah Washington succinctly wraps up how Dixie State College felt after Friday's doubleheader against Academy of Art – "What a Difference a Day Makes". Just hours separated from a frustrating split of the first two games in the series, the Red Storm pounced on the visiting Urban Knights in convincing 8-1 and 18-4 victories at Bruce Hurst Field to take three of four game in the Pacific West Conference series.

Dixie State improves to 18-8 on the season and 14-6 in PacWest play. The Urban Knights fell to 2-25 and 2-18 PWC, respectively.

The offense knocked home the game's first run only two batters deep into the lineup. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) doubled and scored on a Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) single. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) plated Yack with an RBI groundout later in the inning.

DSC loaded the bag in the fifth frame with three straight hits, none that left the infield. Andrade notched another run with a deep sacrifice fly and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) bunted his way to a hit and RBI.

The 4-0 lead was more than enough cushion for freshman starter Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham). He struck out five and scattered three hits over six innings for the win (2-0). Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) followed tossing three solid frames of three-hit work.

DSC added insurance with a Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) RBI in the seventh inning and three runs – two more from Andrade with a single – in the home eighth.

Zach Mexicano took the loss for ART U allowing five runs on 12 hits in seven innings (1-5). The Storm outhit the Knights 13 to six.

In game two, DSC spotted southpaw Jason Holmes (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) a 4-0 lead before exploding for the largest single inning of the season. Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis), Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian) and Taylor Stone (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena (AZ)) all had two-run hits while three Storm batters received bases loaded walks in a 10-run fourth inning. Fifteen batters appeared to the plate in the rally.

Slesk added to his banner day with a two-run homer to left center in the sixth frame to cap DSC's 18-4 victory. The junior infielder knocked home six in the finale.

Holmes allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings while fanning five. Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) and Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) each added two strikeouts in single innings of relief. Niko Leite walked seven en route to the loss.

Dixie State begins the final series of an 18-game home stand on Monday against the Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific University. First pitch of an opening doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Hurst.
