ST. GEORGE – After leading 5-0 heading into the seventh inning on Monday's doubleheader opener, Dixie State College was thinking of a potential sweep in Pacific West Conference play. The visiting Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo proved a game is not over until the final out is committed.
The Vulcans scored eight runs over the final three frames, including five in the ninth, to upend the Red Storm 8-7. DSC would respond with a 4-1 win in the finale to take the series three games to one.
Dixie State (15-7, 11-5 PWC) left 13 men on base in the first game Monday. The opportunities for further runs presented themselves multiple times, including in the final frame when Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) was left stranded at third as the potential tying run.
The UHH come from behind victory spoiled six hitless frames to start the contest between starter Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) and Taylor Stone (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena (AZ)). Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) was hit for three runs in the seventh frame and Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) took the loss after five runs (two earned) crossed in the ninth.
Offensively, Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) and Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) had three hits and an RBI each. Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) reached base safely his first five plate appearances to extend his string to 15 consecutive before he flied out to end the game.
In the series finale, Jason Holmes (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) notched his first collegiate pitching victory tossing five strong innings. He allowed an earned run on three hits while fanning three. Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) closed the game with two scoreless frames.
DSC took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning with RBIs from Johnson and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis).
Clinging to a one-run lead in the fifth, Johnson provided cushion with a two-run home run to left field off UHH starter Tyler Simao (L 0-6, CG).
The Red Storm had six hits – three players with two each: Yack, Johnson and Darrington.
Taking three of four from the Vulcans, the Red Strom now turn their collective attention to the Urban Knights of Academy of Art. ART U invades Bruce Hurst Field beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. for the first two games of a four-game series.
