Offense Shines, Then Stalls in Tuesday Split with Mavs

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State College split its non-conference doubleheader Tuesday with the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University under near-perfect weather at Bruce Hurst Field. The Red Storm took the opener 6-1 before falling 4-0 later in the afternoon.
 
The story of the two games will not be the weather, but the great execution on offense in the first game and the utter lack of production at the plate in the second. Dixie State (12-6) had 11 hits in nine innings before being stymied to just one hit in a combined effort of four CMU (12-6) pitchers.
 
DSC scored in the third on a Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) infield single to shortstop – a frame where small ball led to the Storm's run. CMU answered in the next half inning with a solo home run by Colton Schoelkopf.
 
The Storm's three-run fourth inning almost did not happen. Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) hustled to first and beat out a double play to extend the frame. Kata followed with a an RBI single and Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) brought home two with a double leading to DSC's 4-1 lead.
 
Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) extended the lead with a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. Hanley added the final run scoring from third on a balk in the seventh.
 
Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings – his longest outing of the season – to improve to 2-1 on the year.
 
In game two, DSC's lone hits came with one out in the seventh inning, a Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) grounder through the right side.
 
Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) scattered two runs on six hits over three innings to drop his first decision of the year (3-1). Tim Fowler provided the big spark for CMU with a two-run homer.
 
Dixie State returns to action Sunday in the first two games of a four-game series with the Vulcans of UH-Hilo in Pacific West Conference play. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
