BASE: Dixie State salvages series finale at Cal Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On the strength of five-run first inning, the Dixie State baseball team avoided a series sweep at the hands of the host Cal Baptist Lancers on Saturday. The Red Storm defeated CBU 8-4 after dropping the doubleheader opener 7-0.

Dixie State moved to 8-4 on the season, beginning its 2012 season with three series on the road against Pacific West Conference opponents. Cal Baptist sits at 12-4 overall and 10-2 in PWC play.

Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits.

The DSC offense supplied enough support in the opening frame. Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) slapped an RBI single, plating Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan). Three batters later, Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) singled to left field pushing across two more. Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) had an RBI sacrifice fly and Hanley later scored from third on a balk in the five-run, three-hit frame.

After an unearned run scored for the Red Storm in the sixth, Manning homered in the seventh. A second run crossed home on a Nash sac bunt.

Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) and Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) combined for two scoreless innings in relief.

In Saturday's first game, CBU starting pitcher Devyn Rivera struck out nine over eight innings to two-hit ball. DSC ended the game with only four hits. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) and Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) each had two hits.

Dixie State returns to Southern Utah for its long awaited home opener on March 4 against Montana State Billings. First pitch of a doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Bruce Hurst Field.
