Storm baseball dealt DH losses at Cal Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The old adage is that pitching and defense wins championships. Friday afternoon at Totman Stadium, the Cal Baptist Lancers held the Dixie State baseball team to four runs over to games and exploded for 17 runs on 22 hits en route to sweeping the first two games of a four-game Pacific West Conference series.

CBU took the opener 8-2 and breezed to a 15-2 win in game two. The Red Storm dropped to 7-3 on the year and within PacWest play.

In game one, Dixie State took a 2-1 lead after its half of the second inning. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) led off the inning with a solo home run, his third of the year. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) would add an RBI single. DSC stranded three runners in the frame.

Starting pitcher Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) lasted on 3.2 innings (L, 0-1). He allowed four runs, only one earned, on four hits. Two walks with two outs in the fourth inning ended his outing. Justin Jarvis (Hurricane. UT/Hurricane) entered the game and closed the door on the fourth.

Nash and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) had two hits each for the Red Storm.

CBU's Patrick Smith walked five, but held DSC to two runs on four hits over seven innings for the win.

In game two, the Lancers knocked out DSC starter Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) in the second on the way to seven runs. CBU was spotted 15 runs in six innings before the Red Storm broke up the potential shutout with their runs in the seventh.

Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) slugged a two-run homer, plating Andrade, in the three-hit frame.

Jon Bengard went the distance for CBU. He struck out nine DSC hitters in seven innings while scattering seen hits.

The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon MST, 11 a.m. PST from Riverside.
