Storm Baseball splits in the Desert

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHOENIX – Dixie State College received a pair of strong starts Friday during a Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Grand Canyon. The Red Storm defeated the Antelopes 7-2 in the opener, but stumbled in the final two frames of a 4-3 loss in the nightcap.

With the split, the Storm moves to 5-1 overall and within league play.

Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) held the Lopes at bay over six quality innings. He scattered four hits and struck out four in picking up his second win of the year.

Offensively, catchers Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) provided the major firepower. Andrade had a double and a pair of home runs, including going back-to-back with Manning with solo shots in the seventh inning. A two-run shot in the fifth inning provided enough offensive support.

Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) also added three hits as the Storm tallied 14 team safeties in the opening game.

In the nightcap, Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) was superb in five innings. He allowed one hit while striking out two. Dedrick left the game with a 3-0 lead.

Manning broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-out RBI infield single. With two outs in the sixth, Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) lined an RBI triple and Andrade followed with a double.

Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango), a Pacific West Conference preseason selection, ran into trouble in the GCU sixth. The Lopes tied the game, but were shut down trying to score the go-ahead tally. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) threw out a runner at home to keep the game tied into the seventh.

DSC stranded two runners in scoring position in the top half of the final frame. DiMartino struck out the first batter of the home half, but then walked Ernesto Ortiz – a trend that the Storm could not quell. Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) entered from the bullpen and walked two more batters to load the bags.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) was called to end the threat, but a fourth consecutive walk forced in the game-winner for GCU. DiMartino was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Manning, Littlewood and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) each had two hits in the second game.

The Red Storm contests another doubleheader with the Lopes beginning at 1 p.m. from Brazell Stadium.
