DSC fights to end, fall to APU in season finale

2-1 loss end year with seventh straight loss

ST. GEORGE – Kimberly Thurman (Sandy, UT/Alta) netted a gorgeous goal in the 67th minute Saturday, but numerous late attempts did not produce goals. Dixie State College dropped its season finale, 2-1, to the Cougars of Azusa Pacific in front of an energetic crowd at Hansen Stadium.
 
Dixie State played with a renewed vigor in the second half after allowing APU's second goal in the 51st minute. The third opportunity proved to be the Storm's only score. Thurman lined up from the right side and threaded a shot to the left post.
 
Only 15 combined shots were taken during the Pacific West Conference match. The Cougars, winners of 10 consecutive matches, had the advantage nine shots to seven. Azusa Pacific closed their regular season with records of 13-5 overall, 12-2 in the PacWest.
 
Senior goalkeeper Abby Johnson (Escondido, CA/Mission Hills) had four saves in her final match. Johnson and fellow seniors Dacee Stephens (Hyde Park, UT/Sky View) and Kelsey Tesoro (Torrance, CA/Shadow Ridge) were honored before the match.
 
The Red Storm sputtered the closing bell dropping their final seven matches to end the year 6-10-2, 6-8 PWC.
