Red Storm comeback at GCU, Fall Late in PWC match

Box Score

PHOENIX – After facing an early deficit in the Valley of the Sun, Dixie State College evened their Pacific West Conference match on a second half goal by Jennifer Mason (Springville, UT/Springville). Grand Canyon broke the stalemate in the final 10 minutes with a pair of goals to secure a 4-2 victory over the Red Storm.

Jessica Lincoln posted the game winner, her second goal of the match, in the 82nd minute over the head of freshman goalkeeper Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) into the left corner of the net. Gubler had just entered the game 19 seconds prior to facing the fateful shot.

Grand Canyon won its sixth consecutive match, moving to 9-4-2 on the year and 8-1-2 in league.

The match played nearly to the reverse script of the teams' first meeting in St. George on Tuesday. The Lopes took the early lead with first half goals by Jessica Fitzgerald and Lincoln before Dixie State (6-7-2, 6-5 PWC) came from behind.

Megan Marchbanks (Springville, UT/Springville) went top shelf with a goal at the 33:54 mark off a right side assist from Abby Jameson (Tyler, TX/Robert E. Lee).

After the halftime break, Mason took a free kick offering from Kristin Page (Centerville, UT/Viewmont) ripped the center of the net with the equalizer.

GCU outshot Dixie State for the match, 16-12. Marchbanks led DSC with four shots.

Abby Johnson (Escondido, CA/Mission Hills) tallied five saves in 82 minutes of work while Gubler took the loss allowing the go-ahead score. GCU's keeper, Cat Lena made four stops.

Next on the schedule for the Red Storm is a 3 p.m. Pacific time match on Thursday at California Baptist. It will mark the only match of the year against the defending PacWest champions.
