VB: Dixie State Win's Five Set Thriller Over Hawaii Hilo

Shearer Lead with 21 kills

SAINT GEORGE, Utah -- Sept. 23, 2011—Alex Shearer (Park City. UT/Park City) had 21 kills to lead the Dixie State College in a five game thriller over Hawaii Hilo 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 18-25, 15-13 at the Student Activities Center.
 
The Red Storm (6-4, 1-1 PWC) made a statement in the first set by holding the Vulcans (7-2, 3-2 PWC) to just 14 points. Shearer earned eight of her game high 21 kills in the first set and led DSC to a .286 hitting percentage.
 
Hawaii Hilo recovered in the second set by winning 25-22. UHH took a 22-13 lead only to see the Red Storm charge back behind the arm of Brita Noble. Noble's finished with match with 18 kills, seven kills in the second, but the Red Storm fell just short of a comeback.
 
In the third set the teams traded sides and were squared away at 17 each. The Red Storm then rattled off eight of the next nine points, which included six straight to end the set and give DSC the 25-18 win.
 
Hawaii Hilo would rebound again behind the swinging arm of Hillary Hurley, who amassed a match high 27 kills. She would attempt 72 attacks and hit a solid .222 hitting percentage. Her performance would lead the Vulcans to a 25-18 set victory and force the fifth and deciding frame.
 
After trading points for the first half of the match and the match knotted up at seven, the Red Storm rattled off four straight points. Lynzee Crosland (Kemmerer, WY/) served three straight and DSC used kills from Morgan Hill (Logan. UT/Logan) and Shearer to give them the 11-7 advantage.
 
Hilo would not go away, Hurley again propelled the Vulcans in three straight match points and were only down 14-13. The Red Storm picked up the victory on an attack error on the final play.
 
Hill added 11 kills to Jensen's and Shearer's double digit night. The Red Storm prevailed with stellar defense. Five DSC players had 13 or more digs on the night, Jaycee Jeffress led the way with 20.
 
Dixie State and UHH do battle again tomorrow in the Student Activities Center starting at 2:00 PM.
