WSOC: Red Storm drop PacWest Opener to Grand Canyon

Box Score BOX SCORE

PHOENIX, Ariz.- The Dixie State College women's soccer team dropped their PacWest opener tonight to 2-0 to Grand Canyon University.

Both teams played to a draw in the first half, but the Antelopes (2-3-1, 1-0-0 PacWest) made their mark on the scoreboard first when DSC goalkeeper April Beck (American Fork, UT/American Fork) vacated the keepers box. Julia Anglin was able to capitalize at rolled one in the right side in the 54th minute to give GCU the 1-0 lead.

Grand Canyon added their final goal in the 83rd minute when Veronica Nikas' corner kick was headed in by Jessica Scarpati.

“We played great soccer between the 18-yard boxes, but we didn't capitalize on our scoring opportunities and we had a couple of breakdowns defensively that led to GCU goals,” said DSC head coach Linda Huddleston.

The Red Storm (2-5-0, 0-1-0 PacWest) were out shot 12-7 on the night and were unable to find the goal for the second consecutive game and the fourth time this season.

April Beck (American Fork, UT/American Fork) to the loss in goal for the Red Storm and Stephanie Phillips earned the win for the Antelopes.

Dixie State will have their home opener on Friday night at Hansen Stadium. They welcome Academy of Art to Saint George for a PacWest Conference tilt. The match is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
