ST. GEORGE, Utah –
Junior pitcher James Mahler (Sandy, UT/West Jordan) tossed an abbreviated complete game and the Dixie State offense capitalized on 12 Hawaii-Hilo walks in Monday's 11-3 win at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Red Storm's fifth straight win in Pacific West Conference action came after the game was ended after five innings due to rain and hails showers in Southern Utah.

Mahler scattered three earned runs on five hits while striking out four to improve his record to 4-2.

DSC (15-7, 12-3 PWC) scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Senior infielder Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) cleared the bases with a three-run double and scored later in the inning on a passed ball.

Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) sparked the scoring in the Storm second inning with a RBI sacrifice fly scoring Mike Stile (Las Vegas, NV/Durango)s. Nelson singled home Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) to make the score 6-0.

Hilo starter Ronnie Loeffler did not help his cause by walking six batters in the opening two frames. The one-time PWC Pitcher of the Week ended his start with nine walks allowed in 3.1 innings.

The Vulcans (6-7, 3-4 PWC) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning. David Keller plated two with a double to left and Bryan Patterson's groundout cashed in another run.

Responding as they have the entire series, DSC filled the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) has the highlight swat with a two-run double to right field.

Dixie State had just six hits over five innings. UH Hilo swatted five hits.

The teams will close out the series Tuesday with a pair of seven-inning games. The first game beginning at 12 noon will count toward the league championship race while the second contest will be a non-conference tilt.
