Dedrick, Blanchard Pitch Red Storm to Wins over UH Hilo

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State College strengthened its early lead in the Pacific West Conference baseball standings sweeping the visiting Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo in Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 13-6.

The Red Storm (14-7, 11-3 PWC) moved two-and-a-half games ahead of Hawaii Pacific in the PWC race even as the Sea Warriors dispatched Academy of Art in two games played in Oakland, Calif.

In the series opener, Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) returned from a 16-day layoff to hold UHH (6-6, 3-3 PWC) to four runs, one earned, over seven innings. The winning performance improved Dedrick to 3-1 on the year. Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) closed the final two frames scattering two hits.

Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) led the way offensively with two hits and a pair of RBI. Trevor Goff (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) and Mike Stiles (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) each added multi-hit efforts.

UHH starter Kekoa Lee dropped to 2-1 allowing seven runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings.

Dixie State blew open the nightcap scoring ten combined runs in the third and fourth innings. The offense was give ample opportunities thanks to seven Vulcan errors.

Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) cashed in four runs going 2 for 4, including a two-run single in the Storm's six run outburst in the fourth.

Stiles added two more hits and 3 RBI. Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) had 2 RBI with a single and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Jordon Blanchard (Henderson, NV/Coronado) tossed his longest effort and held on for his second win despite a shaky seventh inning. The right-handed surrendered six runs, five in the final UHH inning, for the win.

Aaron Correa gave up 11 runs on seven hits over three innings for the loss (0-1).

The teams return to Bruce Hurst Field on Monday for another PWC doubleheader at 4 p.m., weather permitting. Rain is in the forecast for Southern Utah beginning in the early morning hours.
