ST. GEORGE – Junior catcher Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) knocked in two runs with a double down the right field line in the sixth inning pushing Dixie State to a 2-1 victory over Azusa Pacific University in the 2011 baseball opener at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Red Storm (1-0) shut down two APU bases loaded situations and endured being no-hit through 5.1 innings before striking quickly in the home sixth.

Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) drew a one-out walk and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) advanced everyone 90 feet with a bunt single toward third base. Andrade lined a 0-1 pitch from Cougar starter Colby Gurney (L, 1-1) inside the chalk line to right scoring both lead runners.

Dixie State starter Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) allowed an earned run over 5.1 innings in his debut start. He staved off a threat in the fifth inning stranding the bases loaded by stirking out lead off hitter Brent Warren.

A pair of Dedrick wild pitches scored Jonathan Erb after a double in the visiting half of the sixth.

Jordan Blanchard shut down the rally for Dedrick and retired three of four batters in the seventh innings to earn the victory in relief.

Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) tossed a perfect eighth frame with two strikeouts.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) trudged through the ninth frame hurling 33 pitches before inducing a ground ball with the bases loaded and two outs to end the game.

Azusa Pacific outhit the Storm eight to four – catcher Anthony Delgado had three hits for the Cougars.

DSC closes out the two-game series with APU Tuesday at 1 p.m. Sophomore Troy Hunter (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) is expected to start for the Red Storm.
