OAKLAND, Calif. – A struggling offense came to life and one pitcher set a strikeout record Saturday at Laney College.

Dixie State College baseball swept through action Saturday defeating Academy of Art 9-2 in game one. Sophomore starting pitcher Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) struck out 15 batters. DSC also led 10-0 through six innings of game two in Pacific West Conference play.

Game two was suspended after the drop-dead time of 3:30 p.m. passed – a time agreed upon before the series to ensure the Storm would not miss their flight home. The final frame will be made up in St. George on Friday, March 4.

Head coach Mike Littlewood said his team played with a gritty, professional attitude after dropping a game Friday.

Nothing epitomized that more than the record-breaking outing from Dedrick. He struck out the side in the second and third innings capping a run of seven straight whiffs. Dedrick notched his final two strikeouts in the eighth inning.

The previous best in the Division-II era came last season when Justin Prodan (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate) fanned 13 against the Urban Knights at home.

“It was as good as a performance from a pitcher I have seen at Dixie State,” Littlewood said.

In eight innings, Dedrick (W, 1-1) scattered one run on four hits.

AAU took a 1-0 lead after five innings. DSC responded in the visiting sixth with three consecutive hits. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) knocked in Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) to knot the game.

An inning later, the Red Storm opened the floodgates. A pair of bases loaded walk started the scoring and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) continued the rally with a two-run double. Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) added an RBI single and Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) supplied the exclamation with a two-run homer to right field. Seven runs on three hits later, Dixie State enjoyed an 8-1 lead.

Trevor Goff (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) tallied an insurance run with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning. Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) surrendered an unearned run in one inning to ensure the victory in Dedrick's masterpiece.

Game two featured ten runs on 13 hits for the Red Storm. Friend went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and tossed four scoreless innings in a starting role.

“Sam was our all-everything guy this weekend,” Littlewood said. “He threw four quality innings.”

Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS), Hanley and Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) also added two hits. DSC blew open the game with a six-run third frame. Boyer and Nelson each had two-run hits during the spurt.

Friend is in line for the victory if Dixie State can close out one inning at home against the Knights.

Academy visits St. George for a pair of doubleheaders beginning Friday at 4 p.m. Mountain.
