Red Storm Split Day One Games with Urban Knights

Mahler gets win in game one, DSC drop 7-inning game two

RHP James Mahler
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OAKLAND, Calif. – For a short time Friday, the Dixie State College basebell team pulled their season record back to the break-even mark. A few hours later, the Red Storm lost for the first time ever to the host Urban Knights.

Dixie State defeated the Academy of Art University 13-7 in the day's first game and dropped a 6-5 decision in game two of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.

The Red Storm (4-5, 1-1 PWC) had never lost to AAU (1-7, 1-1 PWC) on the diamond until Friday playing at Laney College.

In game one, DSC scored eight runs in the first six innings in support of starting pitcher James Mahler (Sandy, UT/West Jordan). The right-hander allowed six runs, five earned, in five innings for his second win of the year.

Junior infielder Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) smacked a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and left fielder Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) lined a pair of doubles with three RBI.

Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) struck out seven batters over the final four innings to earn his second save of the year.

The Urban Knights had an answer for every Red Storm scoring inning in game two of the doubleheader. Outfielder Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) had four RBI including a triple, but an AAU triple by Ryan Worley in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the game-winner.

Knight starter Zach Mexicano went the distance in the seven-inning contest to earn the win. He allowed five runs, only one earned, on five hits while striking out six. Outfielder Johnathan Robbins also set a AAU record swiping four bases in the win.

Jordon Blanchard (Henderson, NV/Coronado) was tagged with the loss after offering the Worley triple.

The teams will play another double-dip Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific time. DSC then hosts the Urban Knights beginning next Friday at Bruce Hurst Field.
