Dixie State closes home schedule with third consecutive draw

Senior day game is sent into extra time

ST. GEORGE – The Red Storm women's soccer program saw two lengthy scoreless strings broken Thursday at Hansen Stadium during a 1-1 draw against Grand Canyon University in a Pacific West Conference matchup.

Mindi Beckstrom (Nibley, UT/Mountain Crest) netted the first Dixie State (7-7-3, 5-3-3 PWC) goal since late in a conference win over Chaminade on Oct. 22 in the 65th minute. Her kick from 20 yards out found the top left corner over the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead and snapped the team's scoreless drought at 305 minutes.

Moments later, at the 72:22 mark, Marina Nesic netted her 10th goal of the year for a Grand Canyon (9-5-3, 8-2-2 PWC) equalizer.

The Nesic goal ended a period of 361 minutes in which Red Storm opponents had not scored.

Dixie State had three opportunities in the overtime periods that failed to find the net.

April Beck (American Fork, UT/American Fork) made nine saves in net for Dixie State, while her counterpart, GCU's Stephanie Phillips, tallied 15 saves. DSC outshot the Antelopes 24-18 on the match.

The Red Storm concludea the 2011 regular season at PWC champion California Baptist on Saturday. The match begins at 1:30 p.m. Mountain time.

NOTES: Grand Canyon earned the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament with the draw.
