ST. GEORGE –
A closely contested matchup in Pacific West Conference play got away quickly from the Dixie State College Red Storm on Thursday. Guard Junior Ale scored 12 of his 15 second-half points during a 25-3 run giving BYU-Hawaii a cushion they never relinquished. The Seasiders downed DSC 83-61 to remain undefeated in the conference.

Dixie State lost at home for a second consecutive game. The last time a DSC team faced a home losing streak of any kind dates back to February 2007.

Turnovers killed the Red Storm. “We had 26 turnovers and 12 assists. That should be the other way around,” head coach Jon Judkins said. BYU-Hawaii forced 14 steals with active hands and swarming defense.

“Give BYU credit – they played hard,” Judkins added. “They score most of their points off turnovers, offensive rebounds and loose balls. Tonight, they did exactly that.”

BYUH guard Jet Chang led all scorers with 19 points. Jake Dastrup connected on a pair of late three-pointers en route to 17 points and Marques Whippy notched a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) for the Seasiders (10-4, 5-0 PWC).

The Seasiders took control of the game with 13:07 remaining forcing five Storm turnovers. The defensive pressure ignited a 12-0 run.

Ale slashed to the hoop for layups and drained crucial three-pointers during the rally. Over a span of eight-plus minutes, the Seasiders outscored Dixie State by 22 points.

Junior forward Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) had 12 points to top the Dixie State leaderboard. “(Griff's) getting there. I would like to see him be as aggressive as Whippy was tonight,” remarked Judkins.

The Red Storm looks to bounce back on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when the Chaminade University Silverswords visit the Burns Arena.
