MSU-Billings gets late victory over Red Storm

PHOENIX, AZ - Coach Danny Ortiz was "pleased with the effort" of his soccer squad Monday night against Montana State-Billings. Off a corner kick, a deflection found the foot of Garion Holian and eventually in the net as the Yellowjackets downed Dixie State 1-0 in the Grand Canyon Classic.

MSU-Billings (1-0-1) outshot the Red Storm (0-2-0) 16-5 and got the fortuitous bounce in the the 86th minute. The Yellowjackets' corner bounced away from DSC goalie Jared Scruggs (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) and right to Holian. He netted the shot in the upper corner.

Dixie State had five shots paced by Josh Hernandez (Kaysville, UT/Davis) with two. Montana State's defense held the Storm without a shot over the last 28 minutes.

First half goalkeeper Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) made seven key saves to keep the match scoreless. "Tyler did a good job making the saves. Jared was equally as good - he just had one get by him", said Ortiz.

The Red Storm return home to Hansen Stadium on Friday, September 10 for a non-conference match with Mesa State College at 7:00pm.
