Mavs Shutout Dixie State

Red Storm drop to 0-3-0 on season

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The winless draught continued for a young Dixie State men's soccer club as they were shutout in their regular-season home opener by Mesa State 2-0 on Friday night at Hansen Stadium.

The non-conference match dropped the Red Storm's season record to 0-3-0. The Mavs remain unbeaten at 3-0-0.

Bashira Ali took corner kick deflection off DSC goalkeeper Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) and netted the rebound in the 32nd minute for a 1-0 lead. The Mavs extended the advantage when Mohamed Gaye trekked through the Red Storm defense and scored in the 67th minute.

Dixie State outshot MSC 11-to-5, but could not find the twine. Nyle Ortiz (Layton, UT/Layton) paced DSC with four shots and came closest to scoring when a first-half header ricocheted off the crossbar. Jordan Roylance (Smithfield, UT/Sky View) added three shots with two coming on goal.

Pac West Conference action is on the horizon for the Red Storm. The team travels to the Bay Area for a week to play four matches against Academy of Art, UH-Hilo, Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican beginning Sept. 16 with the Urban Knights.

DSC returns to play in the St. George-area on September 30 when they battle Hawaii Pacific.
