Opening Blowout Earns DSC Baseball Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Dixie State College baseball came out of the gates quickly blowing out host Mesa State 16-2 in the opening game of a four-game series on Tuesday afternoon. The Mavericks bounced back in the doubleheader nightcap defeating the Red Storm 5-3 at Suplizio Field.

The Red Storm (30-18) knocked around a season-high 19 hits in the first game putting multi-run totals on the scoreboard in four consecutive innings.

Every Dixie State batter had at least one hit off the Mavs pitching in game one. Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) had his best day at the dish going 4-for-5 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) and Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) each went 3-for-4. Adams slammed his 15th homer of the year to deep-left centerfield joining Chase Pittsenbarger (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas) who went yard for three RBI in the second inning.

Troy Hunter (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) hurled a complete game effort – seven innings scattering two runs on nine hits. The freshman ends his first collegiate campaign with a 5-2 record and 3.21 ERA.

The home team sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap with two runs in the first and second innings before the Storm began their comeback effort.

Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) blasted a third-inning home run to right field with Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) aboard to cut the Mavs lead in half, 4-2. Friend added a solo jack in the seventh inning before former DSC product Jack Amidei closed out the MSC win with a strikeout. Mike Sutton allowed just two hits in four innings to earn the win.

Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) dropped to 2-3 surrendering five runs on five hits.

The regular season comes to an end on Wednesday from Grand Junction when the Storm plays another doubleheader with the Mavericks. First pitch from Spilizio Field is scheduled for 12:00pm.
