DSC Secures Second in Pac West, Split DH

Red Storm defeat Antelopes three games to one

GEORGE, Utah – Needing one victory to secure a second place finish in the Pacific West Conference, the Dixie State baseball team defeated Grand Canyon 8-5 in the first of two games on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The Antelopes salvaged the series finale over DSC 11-7.

Dixie State (29-17, 19-13 PWC) celebrated Senior Day by providing enough offensive support for Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) in game one. The senior righty earned victory number six allowing five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Grimes also added to his remarkable season tally of pick offs to nine by nabbing one baserunner in the third inning. Payton Rentmeister (Riverton, UT/Riverton) and Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) tossed the final 2.2 innings without surrendering a run.

On the offensive side, senior Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) provided three RBI with a pair of singles to lead the Storm. Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) and Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) each had two hits with Boyer scoring three times. Chase Pittsenbarger (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas) highlighted a four-run third with a bases-clearing, three-run double.

GCU starter Justin McKee was tagged for eight runs on ten hits for the loss.

In the finale, Grand Canyon plated nine runs in innings four through six leading to the win. Colin Courtland pitched and batted his way to a dominating performance. On the mound, he picked up the W scattering six runs on eight hits. Courtland added three hits and three RBI from the clean-up spot to aid his own cause. Tyler Bair, Danny Bethea and Gavin Tucker all hit home runs for the Lopes.

Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) shined at the plate for Dixie State going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four runs scored. Boyer and Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) added multi-hit games. Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) dropped the decision in relief allowing six runs on seven hits in less than two innings. The game featured three seniors on the mound – starter Tim McMahon (Littleton. CO/Heritage), #B.J. Ferguson# and Morlock.

Dixie State heads on out the road to complete the 2010 regular season beginning Tuesday afternoon against Mesa State College in Grand Junction, CO. First pitch of a scheduled doubleheader is set for 3:30pm.
