Storm Sweep Lopes in Pac West Battle

Oldfield homers twice; Prodan, Hunter have solid starts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State College gained an upper-hand in the battle for second place in the Pacific West Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Grand Canyon University on Friday by scores of 8-3 and 6-1.

The Red Storm (28-16, 18-12 PWC) have a two-game cushion over the Antelopes (26-22, 16-14 PWC) with two games in conference left for both squads. Hawaii Pacific has claimed at least a share of the Pac West title and can close out the race with one win over their final eight games.

Justin Prodan (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate) completed his seventh game of the season scattering three runs on nine hits to improve to 7-4. Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) led the offensive charge in the series opener going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) added a two-run double and Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) swatted a pair of hits for DSC.

Jeff Urlaub took the loss for Grand Canyon allowing seven runs on ten hits over five innings.

In the nightcap, DSC struck early against freshman hurler Cody Repenning (L, 2-1). In the span of the first six pitches Boyer singled and stole second, Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) singled home Boyer & Oldfield blasted his second homer of the day to push the Storm ahead 3-0. Yack tallied a second RBI beating out an infield single to short with two outs plating Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak).

Rhett Welsh (Arvada, CO/Standley Lake) plated Oldfield in the fifth on a sac fly and Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) doubled home Chase Pittsenbarger (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas) to close the scoring.

Freshman Troy Hunter (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) threw five strong innings of one-hit, six-hit ball to up his record to 4-2. Lane Kirby (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) closed the final two scoreless innings.

Dixie State and Grand Canyon battle two more times on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00pm. Coach Mike Littlewood and the Athletic Staff will honor our seven seniors with a Senior Day ceremony.
