DSC Baseball Splits Tuesday Games with Hilo

Storm offense backs Grimes; later falls victim to 11K performance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, HAWAII – Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) fell one out shy of a complete game on Tuesday night as Dixie State beat Hawaii-Hilo 8-3 in the day's opening game. DSC then fanned a season-high 11 times against southpaw Kekoa Lee dropping a chance to sweep the Vulcans losing 5-1 in the nightcap.

Dixie State (26-15, 16-12 PWC) had Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) thwart a seventh-inning rally to earn his eighth save. Grimes allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in 6.2 innings to improve to 5-4. The senior starter struck out six and survived issuing seven walks.

Offensively, Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) began the scoring with a two-run double in the first and ended the game 2-for-3. Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) and Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) each had two hits and an RBI while Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) went 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Storm also threw in a hidden ball trick which led to a crucial out at third in the Vulcans' final inning.

In the nightcap, Hilo's starter Lee stymied the Storm allowing just a run on four hits while fanning 11. Boyer and Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) provided all of the offense – each swatted two hits with Boyer cashing in the RBI.

Justin Prodan (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate) went the distance in the loss (6-4). He scattered all five Hilo runs in the first two innings scattering five hits. Over the final five frames, Prodan gave up just one more additional safety and struck out five.

UHH outfielder Ronel Trias went 3-3 in the game, scored twice and knocked in one.

The series finale is a nine inning, non-conference battle beginning at 11:00am Hawaiian (3:00pm Mountain).
