Comeback Salvages Series Finale at HPU

Down by five, DSC stages dramatic extra-inning victory

Quinn Boyer had 5 hits on Saturday
Box Score WAIPAHU, HAWAII – Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) looped an RBI single to center in the top of the 11th inning pushing Dixie State to a series finale win at Hawaii Pacific 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park. The opportunity to dethrone the Sea Warriors in extra frames nearly did not occur.

Dixie State (25-12) trailed by five runs, 8-3, after the fifth inning. The comeback effort began an inning later with Yack doubling down the right field line scoring Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS).

Yack again played a key role in DSC's two run eighth. His RBI sacrifice fly to left paired with an Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) run-scoring single to center put the Storm within two at 8-6.

In the ninth, pinch runner Eric Doi (Cottonwood. UT/Cottonwood) scored from second after an errant throw to third on a sac bunt from Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) was tossed into foul territory. Boyer singled through the left side to plate Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) with the equalizer. The Storm thought they had the go-ahead run in when Jensen broke from third on a grounder to short, but he was cut down at the plate. An inning-ending double play ended the threat.

The go-ahead run pushed across home with two out in the 11th frame. Yack's two-strike pitch single off Chad Wagner (L, 2-1) into center again plated Boyer.

Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) entered the game with two outs in the ninth, shut down a ninth inning HPU rally and then closed the game with a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 11th to earn the relief victory (3-1).

Boyer went 5-for-6 becoming the first DSC player to have five hits in a game this season. Yack went 3-6 with 3RBI and Zitting went 2-for 6.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid against Hawaii Pacific.

Dixie State returns to action on the Big Island against UH Hilo beginning Monday night at 4:00pm Hawaiian (8:00pm MST). Justin Prodan (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate) is expected to get the start for the Storm for one of the two doubleheader games from Wong Stadium.
