Box Score 2 MORAGA, CALIF. – Games on day two of Dixie State's baseball series with Academy of Art University were tighter than day one, but the Red Storm prevailed twice with 3-1 and 8-2 victories on Saturday in Pacific West Conference play.
DSC (10-6, 5-3 PWC) took the early game scoring two runs on in the seventh inning.
Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta), with two on and two out, singled to left plating
Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) and
Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) with the game-winning runs.
Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) earns the win going six innings allowing one run on five hits. He struck out six to improve to 2-3 on the year.
Todd Morlock (Magna, UT /Taylorsville) pitched a scoreless seventh for save number three.
Zach Mexicano went the distance for AAU, but took the loss scattering three runs on seven hits.
In the series finale, Dixie State scored six runs answered in innings five through seven to complete the sweep. The game-winner scored thanks to DSC getting an extra chance at the plate.
Rhett Welsh (Arvada, CO/Standley Lake) singled with two out and the inning should have ended when
Chase Pittsenbarger (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas) struck out, but a catcher's throwing error on the dropped third strike kept the frame alive.
Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) made the Urban Knights pay with a solid single plating Welsh.
Boyer knocked an RBI triple in the sixth and scored on another AAU error to give DSC a 5-2 lead. Another key Urban Knight miscue in the seventh inning added insurance runs. With two down,
Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) grounded to short with two in scoring position. An error by the SS scored two and put Zitting at second. Yack singled to left bringing home the inning's third unearned run.
Adams put the Storm up early 2-0 with a home run, his second of the series.
Lane Kirby (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) picked up the win (2-0) in relief tossing 2.2 innings of two-hit ball.
The Red Storm returns home beginning Sunday, March 14 for the first two games in a five-game set with Hawaii Pacific University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
