Comeback win extends win streak to six

DSC celebrates the sweep over UH Hilo
Box Score ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Early leads of 7-2 and 8-4 for the visitors did not unnerve the Dixie State College baseball team in the series finale against Hawaii-Hilo. The Red Storm scored seven runs unanswered over the final five innings to earn an 11-8 comeback win in Pacific West non-conference action at Bruce Hurst Field.

Dixie State (17-9, 10-6 PWC) got five solid innings of relief from Payton Rentmeister (Riverton, UT/Riverton) and two more frames from Lane Kirby (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) to hold the Vulcans to two runs after a six-run barrage early. Rentmeister earned his second win in the series (3-1) scattering two runs on four hits and striking out five. Kirby notched save number two allowing one hit in two innings.

Half of DSC's 18 hits were for extra bases. Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) tripled down the right field line to plate the game-tying runs in the fifth inning. Another triple from Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS), leading off in the seventh, was cashed in by a sacrifice fly by Quinn Boye (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS)r to put the Storm up 9-8. Brett Adams (Sandy, UT/Alta) provided the final cushion with a two-run, line-drive bullet home run to right capping the eighth.

Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) and Rhett Welsh (Arvada, CO/Standley Lake) also homered for Dixie State.

Three players chipped in three hits – Welsh, Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) and Judd Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville). In the series, Dixie State batted .408 collectively as a team.
